The one with two threes

Of the things I don't like, celebrating my own birthday is somewhere at the top of the list (not quite sure which one is the winner, but top contenders for the coveted number one spot are definitely my own birthday, getting up early, spiders, and winter). I do have mixed feelings about my b'day: on the one hand, I am grateful to be in good health and being able to add another year. On the other hand, I always feel that the year went by too quickly and I could have accomplished more. And 33... Does that sound old or what?

The day started with a morning walk combined with some grocery shopping (cheese! prosecco! pie!). I almost never buy flowers for myself, but I think I did deserve some on my birthday. So I treated myself to ranunculus, my favourite kind of flowers, next to peonies. I had some friends over during the day, and in the evening we had a snack food type of dinner.

Besides birthdays and spiders, I'm also not a big fan of having my picture taken. I did discover I made an accidental selfie though  :-)

How do you feel when it comes to celebrating your own birthday?

  1. Yummy post today :) The ranunculus are gorgeous! Even though you don't like celebrating your own birthday, I do hope you had a great time :) Also...33 is young!!!

  3. Looks like you found a great way to celebrate your birthday :) Flowers make everything better :)
I felt the same way this year turning 32. THIRTY-TWO...how did that happen?!?

  4. Happy 33rd! Not old, my friend...and you are right: we are LUCKY to be turning that year older. For sure.

That being said, I'm not fan of my own birthday either. I'm an introvert so it's uncomfortable to be celebrating loudly with lots of people. My day is usually capped with a nice dinner downtown with my man. That's the best ;)

  5. Oh, wow - what a tasty looking meal! My birthday always makes me contemplative. I remember staying up late being upset the night before my 10th birthday contemplating how it would feel to be a double digit number and realizing that I'd probably only ever have a double digit age ever again! I'll be 30 this year, which definitely has me thinking. 33 has such a great symmetry to it, though! And if there's that much tasty cheese involved, well, I think I'm looking forward to it. =)

  6. Yum, that looks like the perfect birthday! Birthdays make my pensive, too. These days I like to get to my favorite hostels/weekend trips on my birthday. "The Hostel in the Woods" is my favorite on in the world right now.

  7. We are so much alike; I think I have all the same things on my list of things I don't like with having my picture taken probably number one haha. And I love ranunculus too! It sounds like you had a good day with good people, which is the best way to celebrate anything. Happy birthday, Marieken! :)

  8. I can totally relate! I never like the attention so I tend to not mention my birthday until after the fact. 33 is so young! I just turned 41. I must say I do feel better every year because I seem to feel more confident and healthier (that probably comes with growing wiser). Cheese and flowers are a perfect birthday treat. Cute accidental selfie and the flowers are beautiful. Wishing you a fulfilling new year.

  9. Happy Birthday! :-) It sounds like you had a wonderful time with friends even if it's not your favorite day. Snack food for dinner is something I love, too.

I actually enjoy my birthday most of the time. Occasionally it will make me introspective and sad about how quickly time goes by, but normally I look forward to being a year older and wiser. I'll be 30 this year and I'm excited to start a new decade.

  10. Minus the number, birthdays are supposedly "happy" and time to spend with loved ones. In my case however, I indulge myself with great food, sleep and movies. Truth to be told, my birthdays have always been quiet and boring... At the end of the day, I just condition myself that this is another year to be thankful for.

  11. I love your selfie...and 33? You're still a baby. lol
I myself would prefer to ignore my birthday...I will take gifts though. :0)
Happy late birthday wishes to you.
