Finally, we got to visit the Rijksmuseum. After a ten year renovation, the museum opened it's doors last year. We decided to wait a bit before visiting, because of horror stories about how busy it was. We gave it a try last year, but ended up going somewhere else because of the crazy long line at the entrance. This time, our mission was accomplished, we got in! We oohed and aahed over the building, had the yummiest cheese platter (that looked like a piece of art itself) and tried to catch a glimpse over the Nightwatch. I made some photo's of all sorts of collections in the basement: tiles, keys, glasses, boats, ceramics and teeny tiny kitchen utensils.

ReplyDeleteyou saw the Nightwatch? In person? oh my. the play of light........Chiaroscuro. Rembrandt was an absolute master of that. When I was at the Gardner recently (where rembrandt was sadly stolen from) I entered the room where the painting had been and turned back to the wall and saw a portrait of a man and thought...........that HAS to be a rembrandt, simply because of the lighting. It was.........and it was a self portrait (which kind of made me laugh since I was saying in my head........a rembrandt, for sure). how wonderful you got in this time. oh my, all those collections look amazing.
ReplyDeleteYes, in person! It was especially fun to see how people responded to the painting. I took lots of photo's of how crowded it was over there. I can imagine it's a bit the same as a boyband concert. No people fainting though. There was too much to see, so I'm afraid we'll need to go back :-)
DeleteIt looks nice! We had two museums here that were undergoing renovations for like 8 or 9 years. Why do museums always take so long?

DeleteSounds like it was a fabulous time! I would love to visit the new and improved version, I was there about 13 years ago so just missed all the renovating. I would love to see the cheese plate you had--sounds delish :)

DeleteI so envy you. When I was in Amsterdam, it was closed and I think I need to come back because, of all museums, this one really intrigues me. I like your approach with this post, of focusing on the collections!
