Finally, we got to visit the Rijksmuseum. After a ten year renovation, the museum opened it's doors last year. We decided to wait a bit before visiting, because of horror stories about how busy it was. We gave it a try last year, but ended up going somewhere else because of the crazy long line at the entrance. This time, our mission was accomplished, we got in! We oohed and aahed over the building, had the yummiest cheese platter (that looked like a piece of art itself) and tried to catch a glimpse over the Nightwatch. I made some photo's of all sorts of collections in the basement: tiles, keys, glasses, boats, ceramics and teeny tiny kitchen utensils.
Love the key display. And the wine glasses/goblets!
ReplyDeleteThose keys are my favourite :-)
ReplyDeleteyou saw the Nightwatch? In person? oh my. the play of light........Chiaroscuro. Rembrandt was an absolute master of that. When I was at the Gardner recently (where rembrandt was sadly stolen from) I entered the room where the painting had been and turned back to the wall and saw a portrait of a man and thought...........that HAS to be a rembrandt, simply because of the lighting. It was.........and it was a self portrait (which kind of made me laugh since I was saying in my head........a rembrandt, for sure). how wonderful you got in this time. oh my, all those collections look amazing.
ReplyDeleteYes, in person! It was especially fun to see how people responded to the painting. I took lots of photo's of how crowded it was over there. I can imagine it's a bit the same as a boyband concert. No people fainting though. There was too much to see, so I'm afraid we'll need to go back :-)
DeleteIt looks nice! We had two museums here that were undergoing renovations for like 8 or 9 years. Why do museums always take so long?
ReplyDeleteMaybe they have other things to do? I thought the 10 years it took the Rijksmuseum was extreme, but apparently it's kind of normal!
DeleteThat key collection is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteMust have been quite an experience seeing The Nightwatch in person :)
Yes it was, I think I might need to experiment with making some key brooches!
DeleteOehh those glasses, nice!
ReplyDeleteI bet the BP Moscato would taste even better from one of those!
DeleteOh what a wonderful place and those glasses look stunning. Kisses, darling.
ReplyDeleteThey were even more stunning in real life!
DeleteWow - so many things! And a 10 year renovation? Dang. I love the sailing ship tiles. They're definitely my favorite!
ReplyDeleteDelft blue might be considered a bit kitschy, but I wouldn't mind have tiles like that in my home.
DeleteSounds like it was a fabulous time! I would love to visit the new and improved version, I was there about 13 years ago so just missed all the renovating. I would love to see the cheese plate you had--sounds delish :)
ReplyDeletexo Mary Jo
It was! I love everything cheese!
DeleteIt seems like forever since I have been to a museum. This one looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteTracy @ Sunny Days and Starry Nights
It was, I really need to squeeze in more museum visits.
DeleteOh my. I want those glasses for my own display in my apartment...I'll take the keys too.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about printing and framing those keys :-)
DeleteI've been there once, and definitely want to go back! Look at those tiny utensils....too cute:D
ReplyDeleteThere were also tiny chairs made of silver, adorable!
DeleteWow looks amazing! I looooove those Keys!!
ReplyDeleteSo do I!
Delete10 years of renovation?!? Wow! Long wait, but I believe it was so worth it. I love the displayed keys. I actually want to replicate it at home.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever do so, I'd love to see the result!
DeleteYou're welcome Mia :-)
ReplyDeleteThese photos are lovely, especially the last one! The small utensils are pretty cute too :) Ten years is a pretty long renovation, so it must have been fun to finally get to see it xx
ReplyDeleteYes it was! But we almost waited for a year to avoid the biggest crowd :-) Definitely will be going again.
DeleteI so envy you. When I was in Amsterdam, it was closed and I think I need to come back because, of all museums, this one really intrigues me. I like your approach with this post, of focusing on the collections!
ReplyDeleteIf you ever get the chance to go, we have some pretty amazing museums over here. And cheeses, lots of good cheeses over here too!
