The one with a visit to the Van Abbemuseum

Two sundays ago, mom and me took a trainride to the city of Eindhoven. It's a 45 minute trainride and our destination was the van Abbemuseum. The museum is named after it's founder Henri van Abbe, a collector of modern and contemporary art, with works of artists like Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall and Karel Appel. We took the audio tour, which was awesome! Theatre actor Lucas de Man was the voice of the soundwalk, and took us everywhere around the museum, telling all sorts of tidbits about the building and collection, and interviewing museum staff. The art was amazing, and just the building is worth a visit too. I loved the musical elevator it has, starting with a low voice in the basement, getting more soprano-like the higher it gets.

The 'knitted' snakes in the restaurant (where I had the most mouthwatering asparagus soup) aren't just for decoration, they also make the space less noisy. Thumbs up for art that isn't just there for it's good looks, but has a function as well.

You might have seen the hi-ha-ha wall on my instagram, I also made a little video. When I grow up, and have a grown-up-people's house, I want this in my living room!

And as a bonus, we saw this on out way back to the train station. Have you been to a museum lately? Or taken any other trips out of town?

  1. Sounds like you had a great day in Eindhoven! The Ha Ha Ha wall is so funny. It's weird that I only visit a museum when I'm traveling and never in my own land.

  12. Such fun, M! A musical elevator you say? Why, I feel I'd never leave the elevator...that's hysterical!

We recently went on a tour of our provincial parliament building in Victoria, BC. We had our kids with us (they're six and three) so we weren't sure how it was going to be. Since we've exposed them to museums since they were born, they are actually fairly attentive and love hands-on experiences to learn. It was great for all of us!

    1. Great that you take your kids with you! Over here it's not very common, but slowly museums start to organise all sorts of fun activities for kids.

  13. What a very cool place! I think it's wonderful when the building itself becomes an important part of the experience. The sound snakes are such a very clever idea and the HiHaHa wall is totally fun.

  14. Hey, I love the lockers photo. How great is that. Museums and Art Galleries are great...although I can only handle them in small doses as I find the onslaught on the senses overwhelming... I can only digest art in small sittings otherwise my mind gets info overload. It also depends on how the exhibition is presented.

    1. I got my jacket from the lockers and thought they were a piece of art too! I sometimes get overwhelmed by all the art, so sometimes one museum needs more visits.

  18. Thats a really cool museum. The last time I went to a museum was probably about a 2months ago. There was an exhibit on a American Artist from the 1920s. It was really nice. I might go back to that same museum next week and see if they have a different exhibit going on.

  19. You and your mom always have the best bonding experiences. I wish I could join you some time :).. if only Ph is not so far and expensive from Germany.

For some reason, I'm fascinated with the lockers :)
