The one with a sharpie and a plate

I know I'm not the first one with a sharpie DIY, and that there must be thousands of these floating around on the internet. I hope no one will object to one more. In my opinion, the best DIY's are the easy ones, that don't take up a lot of your time and the ones that don't need lots of supplies to make. All you need for this one are a plate, a sharpie and an oven.

Start by making ovals

Make triangles

Don't forget to bake your plate for half an hour at 150ºC / 300ºF
I do my dishes the old fashioned way, but once baked, it should
be dishwasher-proof.

    1. I used an oil based sharpie, with an extra fine tip. The plate I used was a cheap cake plate.

  3. Cool idea! I'd probably sit, frozen, with Sharpie in hand, afraid to make the first mark . . .

    1. No problem if you make a mistake, it easily comes off with a bit of warm water. :-)

  4. love simple and easy DIY too, your plate looks great! I do a similar thing using jam jars, then they become containers for spices and such.

  10. I really like this idea! I've seen other tutorials where people try to put them in the dishwasher and the design fades, so I think washing by hand is the safest choice.

  11. You have just inspired me! A couple years ago I spent over a hundred bucks on white square and rectangular serving plates for a dessert table at a baby shower. I think I should jazz them up for the holidays! I do have a ton of glass paints but never thought to use it on those plates. Thanks for the idea!

    1. I have no idea! I think the oven is easiest, if the dryer does the job as well, it might take a lot of time. Maybe a friendly neighbour with a working oven?

  14. I've seen lots of comments that this doesn't actually stick for too long, especially if using a dishwasher... any thoughts? Some say that you should use porcelain only, others say, let it completely cool in the oven. Any suggestions from those who have tried and been successful?

    1. I don't know how it stays on in the dishwasher (I don't have one), but this stays on fine so far. Maybe you could test with just a small, easy drawing.

    1. Hope it works with your kind of Sharpies! Just don't wash your creations in a dishwasher but by hand :-)
